Overcoming Stress: Part 1

[Before I share this personal story, a couple points:

1) I share this with the goal of helping you understand the roots of your own stress.

2) I want you to realize that the majority of your stress today comes from unresolved events from your past projecting into today.

3) I want you to comprehend that there are neurological points you can physically access to create both short-term and long-term resolution of your stress.

4) Finally, even though this story, and the story that I shared earlier this year of my friend Doug suddenly dying in my arms represent major trauma, even lesser traumas or periods of helplessness can have holding power within our nervous system.]

When something really bad happens in the Navy, the entire US Navy leadership finds out about it via an incident report.

As I sat there trembling one morning on the U.S.S. Truxtun, this was exactly the situation I was in.

We were in the middle of the ocean coming back from a 6-month patrol near the Middle East.

We had just scrammed the nuclear reactor that I was standing watch on because of a loss of vacuum to machinery that I was in charge of.

All the initial fingers were lightly being pointed at me as the investigation was unfolding. Both the Captain and Chief Engineer were down in the Control Room of the nuclear reactor asking questions.

I was told to go and gather myself.

It was hard for me to function. I mostly remember just sitting there trembling.

Just a few hours earlier, all was well. I was standing the 3 – 7 AM watch in the #1 engine room adjacent to the nuclear reactor.

I was in charge of large equipment, including the turbine generators that our large ship used to generate power for all onboard activities.

We had two nuclear reactors onboard the ship. These provided the power that created the steam to propel the ship through the water and provide all electricity.

It was very unusual in the middle of that 3-7 AM watch to hear the Reactor Operator casually announce over the intercom, “Vacuum #1 Ship Service Turbine Generator 40 pounds and slowly lowering.”

That was one of many pieces of equipment I was charged to monitor. I took immediate notice.

I started looking into the situation. There was a problem and it was my job to find a solution.

Within five minutes that same voice came on the intercom with a little more urgency, “Vacuum #1 Ship Service Turbine Generator 25 pounds and lowering.”

By now I had the assistance of the Supervisor of the entire engine room at my side, both of us hustling with anxiety. We could not find a cause and it was obvious the problem was getting worse.

A couple minutes later, I remember the spike of my anxiety as the voice on the intercom urgently called out very loudly, “Vacuum #1 Ship Service Turbine Generator 16 and dropping!”

In the seconds following, I remember not being able to think well. I hustled around looking for a cause I knew that I would not find.

The next statement felt like a scream on the intercom… ”Vacuum under 10, SCRAM #1 reactor!”

To “scam a nuclear reactor” is a really big deal and rarely ever occurs. It means you drop the control rods that immediately prevent the fission nuclear reaction from taking place.

We would occasionally shut down one of our reactors or scram one during drills at sea.

But to NEED to do it was very unusual.

This isn’t like turning on and off your car.

It takes over 4 hours to start a nuclear reactor back up.

This was a huge deal and I was directly in the middle of it. If found at fault, I could at worst lose my job as a “Nuke” in the Navy, after completing the most academically difficult program in all the military (according to the Navy).

At best, I would have to do tremendous remedial work in addition to the 16 hours work days we averaged when out at sea.

If we only had one reactor, our entire ship would be “dead” in the water. No power, no propulsion.

Since we had two nuclear reactors onboard, we had to immediately cross-connect the steam plants between the two reactors to keep our equipment running.

I’m wired for responsibility. So the weight of this was enormous.

This was MY equipment on MY watch… MY responsibility. I sat frozen… my whole body lightly trembling.

So many things from my past all joined into this moment… old failures, old blame, being “in trouble” by my dad, etc.

When you are stressed, your nervous system tends to flee, fight, or freeze. I was deep in a freeze state, feeling disassociated from myself.

It took 3 hours for the investigation to report what went wrong and who was to blame.

They found that an officer had “danger tagged” out a supply line associated with that generator and forgot to have the line re-opened prior to my watch.

I was cleared!

While that was a huge relief and weight off my shoulders, damage had been done to my nervous system in the name of TRAUMA.

And I would carry this and the negative effects within my nervous system for many years.

Since 2003, I have learned from some of the best neuro-science innovators in the world how we can access what I call “the stress reset buttons” to remove the effects of stress from the body.

Additionally, I’ve developed my own neuro-physical methods that are extremely effective.

I will be sharing all of this next week in my 35 minute presentation: The Stress Reset Buttons.

For people who ATTEND my presentation, I will gift you my $97 digital program: The 5 Minute Stress Reset and Core Activation Series. [if you live outside Helena or have no opportunity to attend, hit reply and let me know]

Myself and others have radically simplified the process of recovery from stress, and I want to share it with you.

You will come away with a new understanding and be able to take simple actions to tease stress out of your body.

You will see FREEZE, which is the most common stress response in the US, in a whole new light and understand how to work yourself right out of it… literally in a few minutes.

I’ve seen my own stress radically reduced. I’ve also had people say that more was accomplished in one session with me than years of counseling (of course I am an advocate of quality counseling, especially when serious matters are involved).
